Finding Your Marital Role Model: Ephesians 5:25
Remember when you first announced your engagement? The advice givers had a lot to offer and their insights rolled out in a crescendo as your wedding day approached. The well-intentioned tidbits have likely continued appearing from time to time, as the givers think you may benefit from it.
I’ll bet you’ve heard your share of scripture quoted by these folks. Perhaps you’ve even sought out verses that will lift up your marriage and yourself. You’ve combed over or been quoted Proverbs. Maybe you’ve memorized 1st Corinthians 13. You’ve pondered what 1 Peter, Colossians and Ephesians meant about submission. These are all worthy of study, but, have you taken a good look at Ephesians 5:25?
“Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her.” ~ Ephesians 5:25
The Ultimate Role Model
Just think about those words. Love as Christ has loved the church. Christ’s love was sacrificial. He came to walk the Earth as man. While here, He served and loved. Ultimately, however, He gave his life so that we may have life through Him. Just think about that. Jesus came to set the captives free and mend the brokenhearted
Love as He Loved
So what does that mean for us? How do we love as Christ loved us? Certainly that sounds a little daunting. The good news, however, is that we’re not alone. In fact, we’ve got a role model that carries us through and if we include Him in the relationship, He’ll do the heavy lifting. By making Christ the cornerstone of your marriage, you will be able to strengthen the communication, commitment, and respect within your marriage through a focus on gratitude and love.
Challenge: This week take time to read and pray over Ephesians 5:25. How will you learn from Christ’s example?
